It's very easy to become complacent about buddy groups & I've seen this happen with divers on vacation as well as supposed professionals. My lesson learned after a supposed buddy didn't act like one is to now have the buddy discussion before I splash down. If they don't want to act like a buddy, that's fine. I then find another buddy even if I'm part of a threesome or have to hire someone.
 
Hi and Welcome! What dive site is this? Is this in PG? From experience, emergency procedures tend to vary here by location/dive site. As previously noted, there should always be a briefing/agreement on what happens during separation/emergencies. I'm just glad things turned out OK.
