I always have a standard SPG on my reg. I can live without my depth gauge and using my buddies for the rest of the dive is not out of the question on most dives I do but without my air pressure I am diving blind.

cant afford a dive computer

AI computer on my wrist and back-up spg clipped off to a waste d-ring. I have not had to use it yet but if it saves just one dive half way around the world then it paid for itself. I also use it when I first hook-up my tank so I don't have to fire up the computer until I am ready to splash.
