This thread is getting odder and odder.
Yes.
I guess anything that even mentions something more than recreational diving goes this way.
If cave diving where like the bottom of my sofa, I could sell 50k worth of dive gear. Your buddy doesn't know what he's talking about. Neither do you if you think there's nothing to see.
Ever been to the Grand Canyon? All it is rocks and water right? But tens of thousands of people go see it every year. Now, imagine it filled with crystal clear water and you getting to swim all over it. You don't have to look from afar, you can swim right up to the beauty, all the while being weightless, in perfect quiet (on ccr anyway) surrounded by nothing but timeless awe. No nagging phone calls, no worrying about bills, or school or spouse or starter on the car.... just peace and quiet swimming in the middle of a miniature Grand Canyon. You either get it or you don't. And there's no way to help someone "get it" if they don't. It just is.
I get it, and understand what is meant by the quote, but more so, I don't care anymore. What a great quote!
When the time comes, please be sure to ask your instructor where to put your can light and how to route it.......because that is a really, really bad place for it.That's how I tried explaining my desire to learn how to cave dive to my parents... naturally they were opposed to it, then I reminded them I'm more likely to be killed at work or on the way there than doing any hobby I've ever had.
As far as the experience angle, I'm not cave certified yet, but in the last six months, I've purchased a backplate/wing, two sets of doubles, a set of doubles regs, sidemount regs, a stage reg setup, pony/deco bottle, drysuit, new wetsuit, Jet fins, Light Monkey can light, spools, TDI overhead e-learning, and I'm waiting to take my cavern/intro class in March... Almost all of that gear was purchased used except for the Everflex wetsuit and one of the spools. You can find deals, as was said in the thread earlier, but you have to research deals and have cash set aside, ready to spend. Most of the stuff I would use anyways night diving or OW diving year-round, but diving in mid/north Florida with guys that have been cave certified for a long time, it's something I'd like to do.
As for the "why" aspect... why not? Caves are beautiful, and I've always found that kind of thing interesting.

Edd leaves the canister in the middle of his back sticking up higher than anything else and leaves the light cord exposed over his shoulder? I honestly don't know how Edd does it, but I would have suspected that something's different than the photo.Pretty narrow-minded view there, James. It's where I mount mine and where Edd mounts his. In fact, the SMS75, Halcyon Contour, and Hog Sidemount rig are all designed to mount the canister lights right there.
