Most of the good dive spots are 90 min south, in Monterey...Try one of the boats (Monterey Express, Escapade, Cypress Sea) and you'll get some decent diving in.

If you want a beach dive, I'd recommend Lovers Pt., depending on your experience level.

If you get from SF to Monterey in 90 minutes, you will
also have nice yellow badge of courage from the
California Highway Patrol. More like 120 minutes, on a
good day.

During the summer, there are lots of rules at Lovers
that make it a one-dive site. See:
http://www.garlic.com/~triblet/singles/lovers.html

Your profile doesn't indicate where you are from, or what
your cold-water and kelp experience is. There's a bunch
of stuff you need to know. See:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ba_diving/files/WebSite/
and click on newmontereydiver. There's also a list of
Monterey dive boats and Bay Area dive shops there.

I'd suggest a beach dive to start if you don't have cold
water and kelp experience. Any of the Monterey shops
can set you up with a guide.
