With that kind of profile, he should have expected DCS. Go ahead and tell DAN to warm up the chamber in advance...
 
The first thing I think of as a good possible reasoning for the DCS is the free-diving in between dives. I'm pretty sure that any nitrogen bubbles that he had as residual could have easily re-compressed. As far as I could tell, the second dive having an incurred deco stop tells me that he was pushing his limits and probably didn't plan for such a situation, so there's also the possibility it wasn't handled correctly either. A deco stop is something I haven't ever experienced, and really don't want to without the proper training and a little more experience.

Anyway, long story short, I am glad yor friend was alright, and I am glad that we can all take something away from this. I just hope we don't put ourselves in the same situation.
