If you like to float comfortably at the surface then go with the jacket BC. If you like to have a BC that aids you in establishing good horizontal trim, good weight distribution, and less lead on your belt then go with the BPW.
 
I took my open water course in a Jacket style but as soon as I could afford it, my instructor put me in a BPW and I love it. Here was the pro/con list that I made

Pros for a BPW
Less lead required
Less less drag
Ability to move to doubles when I get enough experience
One clasp
transportable
Center of gravity and center of lift close to each other allowing good trim

Cons for a BPW
A little awkward to first get on

Pros for a jacket
Comfortable at the surface
Easy to get on

Cons for a jacket
Drag
weight required
up to 6 buckles to deal with
poor trim
bulky on land
