But to make things worse, the shop owner (and instructor at the same time) said that:

"I'd better take this class somewhere else or some accident can happen in a pool and you will drown, in fact I think I'm going to drown you myself.....#$@$@" !!!! (almost exact words)

At which point, you call his agency AND the police and report him for threatening your life.

The student should have done what he needed to do to get off the computer topic and if asked where he bought them the answer should have been another dive shop.

Sometimes it is necessary to put yourself in someone else's shoes before shooting one's mouth off.

So, the student is now morally obligated to resort to lies and subterfuge to protect the tender sensibilities of the shop owner? How deliciously PC.

HOLY RESURRECTED FROM THE ARCHIVES BATMAN!!! You guys are really going to start arguing a thread that's been dead for 5 years?!?!

Now this ought to bring back some memories (nightmares) for some posters!

BTW, It's been a couple of years since the OP was last active on the board.

This is what makes SB so much fun though! :cool2: Let's keep arguing about something we have all been arguing about forever!

You guys who have an LDS should be peeved at the manufactureres, and the restrictions they impose upon you, and not your customers.

BINGO!!!!!!
It's about the free market. Dive shops can compete with the internet if their property rights are protected the same as the consumers'. If I buy a piece of gear, it's my property, and thus I can sell it to whoever I want, for whatever price I want. The shop's inventory is the shop's property, not the manufacturer's. The competitive pressures of the market will bring the manufacturers around. I won't buy anything from Aqualung or ScubaPro, because they have anti-competitive distribution systems.

The LDS will survive the Internet the same way Nordstrom's survives WalMart - by offering additional value. Ultimately, competition is about offering value. I know plenty of divers who wouldn't think of buying online and giving up the selection and fitting assistance, and post sale support, of the LDS, and they are the LDS' market. There are other divers who could build their own regulator out of crap in their garage - the LDS offers them very little value. The former diver has no business shopping for gear online, and the latter shouldn't be forced to pay for service they don't need. There's business for everyone as long as everyone is prepared to pay for the service they get, and no one is forced to pay for unneeded service.

Ok people here is my story. I went last night to my LDS in the DFW area of Texas for a PADI nitrox class. I wrote my check and went into the class room and filled out all the paperwork and then watched the nitrox video. When the video was over the owner of the shop started talking about the RDP and answering some questions I had.The conversation turned to computers I had already been there two hours. She Judy the owner of the shop asked me if I had a dive computer I said yes she then asked me what kind I replied I have a Suunuto Cobra and a Vytec. I told her I wanted to dive with two in case on a live aboard of or other expensive trip I wanted to cover my bases in case one or the other broke I would not loose any dive time. She understood and then asked do you mine telling me where you bought them and I responded that "you don't want to know." She said oh it's ok I said "on line" Well that was the wrong answer!!! She Judy said"I'll tell you what I am going to do I am going give your check back the class is over because you have no appriciation of a local dive shop and the services we provide and you care more about money than service". WOW my mouth hit the floor I have bought items from her shop and planned on taking other courses with them.Well she went off about black market no warranty or service and other things for about 3 or4 minutes. I was flabber gasted tried to talk to her but it was over. She gave me my check and I was booted out of my nitrox course.WOW!!!WOW!!! Well I do get good service from LP and that matters, and if she is not making enough money on classes raise your rate this is also something she threw at me. Well I did not see a sign posted any where in the shop that said " IF YOU DO NOT BUY ALL YOUR DIVE GEAR HERE YOU CANNOT TAKE CLASSES HERE" Hey she took my money. She will never see another penny!! I have taped my returned check to my monitor and when I am on the LP web page I will look at that check whilel I hit "ADD TO CART"

Read the National Scuba Club thread, this is exactly, exactly a perfect example of what is wrong with the current puppy mill, profit before quality, retail store instruction model. Years ago or yesterday, it goes on and on and on.

Dude... in all fairness that WAS posted in 2003... so... back to my question... are 'standards' going to be established by vote???

My dive shop does their best to price match other shops and some online retailers on items we stock. It's my opinion as a dive shop employee (and my boss's opinion, as well) that you should tread the customer the same way you would like to be treated when you go shopping for something. Good service and friendly attitude means customers are likely to return, possibly with friends. As far as gear purchases, we won't kick you out just because you didn't buy our stuff. Heck, the dive staff is allowed to use whatever gear they want as long as they aren't assisting/teaching a class. When TEACHING, staff must use gear that the store carries. Dive cons (assistant instructors) and instructors are expected to set an example at dive sites, as representitives of the store, whether they are there for class or not

I've taught a Basic class with one person in it. They did not buy 1 piece of gear from the shop where I teach. After I was paid my fee, the shop was in the red by quite a bit. If trends like this continue, the LDSs of the world WILL close down.

That is free enterprise economy for you. Naturally, with the advent of online shopping, LDS's will take a knock. In fact, some of them will not survive as you have just pointed out. It's sad for that particular LDS and its loyal supporters but for free enterprise its great. It means more competition which means more options and better service for the consumer.

Now obviously not all LDS's will go wallop, there will always be a need for them so there will always be some that survive. Which ones will that be? Obviously they can't compete with online stores on prices so they will have to excel in something that the online stores can't offer. I guess that would be good service. Seems to me the LDS that the OP posted about is exactly the kind of LDS that deserve to go wallop because they're not willing to offer that kind of service.
