San Diego is less than an hour drive from Long Beach so I consider that "Long Beach Area" well worth the drive

closer to two + hours from Long Beach to San Diego...

Take the Express or the Flyer to Catalina from Long Beach and dive the park; there are a couple of wrecks there, the diving is great and it only takes about an hour to get there.. Casino Point
