I'm looking to get my OW certification in Kona this October and wondering if anyone has recommendations for good dive shops or shops to avoid? If you have past experience getting your OW certification in the area, I'd love to hear from you!! Thanks :)

I did mine with Jack's Diving Locker. It was a great experience, very professional and the price was great. Do you live in Kona? If so, they have Kama'aina specials for residents.
The class was two weeks .. Tuesdays and Thursdays (5pm - 9pm) for class and pool work. Then two sundays (8am - 4pm) .. one was a two tank shore dive and the other was a two tank boat dive.
Class had six students, an instructor and an assistant.

Aloha,
Sam

JAcks has the big advantage of having there own pool but other shops rent it for classes and if you look around, some are lots cheaper.
Scuba Shack Too is the lowest and has a new boat also. Sorry I don't have the number handy.

One more vote for Jack's Diving Locker www.jacksdivinglocker.com . I did my check-out dives with them. Big Island Divers www.bigislanddivers.com is also a great op, but I can't really comment about their OW certification classes.
