Public access remains open to this very popular dive site during construction of
the much
anticipated seaside resort. Commonly referred to as Marineland (see
California's Best
Beach Dives, 4th Ed.) or OML (for Old MarineLand) but more accurately described
as Long
Point in Rancho Palos Verdes, it is now the 100+ acre site of the new Terranea
Resort and
Spa, owned and operated by Lowe Destination Developement. During resort
construction,
divers and other beach users are currently being diverted to a temporary onsite
parking lot
and street parking @ the corner of Nantasket and Seacove avenues. A fenced
corridor trail
to the beach (approximately .5 mile walk down) can be accessed from here, and is
open
during RPV city park hours of 1 hour before sun up to 1 hour after sunset (note:
this access
trail is subject to infrequent, preapproved and prescheduled closures) Check

Access to the rocky "point" entry area is closed for now and all surf entries
are made from
the cobblestone beach. Today this coldwater dive site is more popular than ever,
though
the temporary extended trail down has thinned the crowds a bit, the diehard
regulars are
always around to lend advice on current conditions. The new public amenities
under
construction include free onsite central parking, ADA graded trail down to the
cove beach,
improved "point" access trail, and divers will be surprised to discover that
half way down
to the new "sandy beach" are restrooms, free beach showers, a snack bar and
picnic area.
Hungry or thirsty divers will also enjoy up to 7 different bar, grill, and
restaurant venues to
choose from, including what should be a popular bar for dive "debriefings" right
above
the rocky point entry area. The onsite day spa will have swimming pool access
(available
with spa services only). 50 additional parking spots have been added to the
Point Vicente
fisherman's access lot at the west end of the property with a new trail to the
the rocky
point from there and remodeling is planned for those restrooms.
Environmentally the entire site including a 9-hole golf course as well as an
additional 200
plus previously untreated acres of city and private land will employ a state of
the art,
world class Contech Storm Filter contaminated run off filtration system, as well
as a system
of natural bioswales which serve essentially as onsite ponds or wetlands.
Approved by
Heal~the~Bay and others, this system could set the standard for future shoreline
projects
worldwide. Before, during and after construction Natural Resources Consultants
(www.e-
nrc.com) of Laguna Beach, is performing the intertidal and near shore monitoring
for
conditional use compliance. Approximately 75% of the property is now naturally
pervious
ground cover, including over 14 acres planted with native species and public
picnic areas.
Removal of the underlying asphalt layer at the cove beach with the addition of
beach sand
and a Bioswale for the existing runoff should reduce previous contaminated water
`sheeting' and help the offshore marine habitat. Every small detail of this
project gets full
attention and an eye toward green. A model of the finished resort is available @
