Hello,

Earlier this month I asked about diving up around the U.P.

I'm from Nebraska, and am going to be visiting relatives in Steven's Point. He (my cousin) is a new diver, I am not. We've agreed that the U.P. is too far for a day trip, or for leaving the wives behind, so I'm wondering if there's anything in Milwaukee to see?

He's new so it'd have to be relatively easy diving.
If nothing is available, he has a local place in mind where they earned their Open Water. We're just looking for a casual dive trip, not an experience of a lifetime. (That's what Bonaire is for.)

Any help is appreciated.

There are lots of great wrecks at varying depths from shallow to 180+. Here are a few links of charters that I would recommend:

http://www.len-der.com/charter_schedule.php

There is a bunch of photos and information on this site- look under local diving

There is also some wreck to the south in Kenosha, and a lot of wreck to the north in Door county, although I haven't ventured that far north yet.

Happy Diving. There are other operators out there, but I don't haven't used them personally. Feel free to PM is you have any questions.

I just did a dive two weeks ago from shore at Atwater Beach in Shorewood, (next to Milw.) on an old wreck called the "Appomatox" . Vis was excellent 25 plus but the bottem temp below 50 degrees, Burr. I used my standard 7mm suit and did get cold in about 30 minutes. Lake Michigan is a challenge, but refreshing, get warm dive gear and book on a good dive boat with knodledgable dive master and go for it. Forget the shore dives. This week is Summerfest in Milwaukee's on the lake front. Music Food and plenty of Beer . It will draw over a million people over the 10 day run ending July 10, so this week you can dive and go to Summerfest. Other festivals are upcomming. This is a great city for summer activity.

There is great diving in Milwaukee. The Len-Der is a very good charter. It is very very slow but heavy and stable if you are not accustomed to the square waves in Lake Michigan. Jerry, the Captian, has found most of the wrecks in the area.

The Nordic Diver is a faster boat but will hop arround on the waves more.

YOu must do the 'Prince Wilhelm.' Rodales ranked it in the top ten in the world a few year ago. My second favorite is the Milwaukee but it is deep for a new diver.

Thanks for your help you guys.
I'll let you know what we end up doing.

Lake Wazee might be a place to consider as well. It is closer to Stevens Point and has beginning dive and advanced dive possibilities. Viz is in the 30 - 40 ft. range
