I tend to agree. It's hard to imagine things going south this fast after safely ascending to the surface. Time will tell I guess.

The surface, after a dive is actually the most dangerous place.

People sometimes lose consciousness due to various dive related and non-dive related medical conditions (AGE, problems with blood pressure, medications, etc.). Other times they have problems maintaining positive buoyancy (BC won't hold air, out of air, forget what to do), then go back under and drown.
