Does anybody ever expect the UN to accomplish anything ? There aren't enough adjectives to define how inept, incompetent, corrupt and bribable they are. A petition may make you feel good but the UN is not the solution. As long as there is a demand for shark fins there will be those who will keep killing sharks. This is a cultural problem with no easy solutions. But don't count on the UN to solve it. Involving the UN usually causes problems to get worse, not better.

Yes, james, the petition can at least make me feel like I am helping to do something, even if it leads to nothing in the end... It beats doing nothing... Do feel free to suggest other solutions.

Yup; well put -

You summarized my comments posted on the "Shark finning in Japan" thread very well

Despite thinking it will do little good, I did sign the petition, however

I was recently in Las Vegas for a conference and stayed at the Palace Hotel (ok, it was cheap!) Anyway, we were going to eat at the Chinese restaurant one night until I saw 'shark fin soup' on the menu. In my ignorance, I had no idea that it was still served in the states, thinking it was limited to restaurants in China these days. I complained to the server, said, 'shame on you,' (words that has never come out of my mouth!), and we walked out.

While getting the government to enact policy against serving the soup is an uphill battle, consumer action can affect business policy. (Especially given current economic conditions.) So, I invite everyone to write a letter to this hotel (address follows), telling them that in planning your trip to Vegas and their hotel, a friend told you that the Chinese restaurant on the property serves shark fin soup and that you will therefore be staying elsewhere. Or, just write and complain! If they get enough negative letters, they may take it off the menu (as happened in some other Vegas hotel I read about online after I got home).

Also, it would be great if a ScubaBoard devotee would rally the troops behind such a cause, research restaurants that serve the soup in the States, and begin a letter writing campaign. There is a huge population of untapped protesters on SB! (anyone???)

Also, here is a website for an active group in San Francisco, protesting Chinatown restaurants: The Shark Safe Project

A petition may not change anything, but I still signed it! Thanks for posting it!

Admire your ethics but until places like China ban shark fin soup - or make it "incorrect" to eat - not much is going to change.

The amount consumed in the USA is a drop in the ocean (pun intended) vs Asia - many (not all) Asians have zero ethics when it comes to what they eat - I always try to at least be a little sensitive to cultural differences, but the more you research, the more I just find a lot of their practices when it comes to food just plain wrong.

For a culture who believes that any animal "...whose back faces heaven" is fair game to eat has a long way to go.

Whilst I agree that signing the petition will likely achieve little, it is better than doing nothing. Better to light a candle than curse the dark etc.

Couple of questions: should one boycott all shark products/foodstuffs? My thinking is yes - my local pub has recently put shark steak on the menu and I will be asking them to remove it upon answer here. And if I ask they will do, as my company spends considerable money in this establishment. I know it's a drop in the ocean but lots of little drops...

Second question - has anyone put forward any compelling solutions towards getting shark finning banned and in particular in China. Or changing eating habits. From my very cursory knowledge, whale foodstuff products are becoming less fashionable in Japan, young people are eating it less, and one would hope that ultimately demand would dry up. Any way something similar could be achieved in China?

Failing getting people to change their behaviour, U.N. based moratoriums or bans do look like the best way forward although I do appreciate it is a difficult challenge.

To the U.N. bashers out there, I appreciate the organisation is not perfect. But it's the best we've got and has effected many positive changes - including the whale hunting moratorium (broadly speaking) - so rather than just dissing it and other solutions - either get with it and lend weight or come up with a better idea. It's very easy to poo-poo ideas. It's much harder to come up with a better one.
