I'll add one thing that has not been mentioned.
All lenses have a "sweetspot", an f/number where they produce their sharpest images. f/16 and above probably aint it..
I dont know what lense you use, but the more expensive options also tend to be sharper than the cheaper ones..
These are two pictures of a moths eye, taken with the same lense and the same focus point. Both are taken with a flash at iso 100 with a shutter speed of 1/250. The sharp one is f/8 and the not sharp one is f/14.. For that close macro the f/stop can make a huge differense in your sharpness..
