+1 for more heat. Not enough heat frays over time. more heat at maybe a little touch up to the end and it's pretty bombproof. The pro hot cutters do it perfectly every time and in about 2 seconds.

Cut it to length, get it HOT, and use the butt end of a screwdriver to flatten it out on a table.

Flat edge soldering iron allows you create a smooth melted border along the edge. Better than a lighter. No lumps, blobs, fraying or other. One time going strong 25 years.
Yes, one tool will do any coarse soldering you need around the house, as well as prevent fraying from polyester webbing, cord, or rope.

If you're feeling crafty it will also burn decorative patterns into wood. Though I think that role has been largely taken by computer-controlled laser rigs.

It (fraying) adds character.

Yep, makes sense.

They're pricey...This one is $250. But I found cheaper ones on eBay.

Yeah, don't buy your hot knife from the guys who make $500+ climbing ropes. Get the same from Amazon or eBay for like $20. Or, do like my friend Jamie and get a cheap $5 machette from Harbor Freight, heat it up with a propane torch, and use that as a hot knife.
