I would like to dissect some regulator to study its internal organs, see if I can sew it back, and maybe even try breathe some life into it in the pursuit of knowledge. Apeks or HOG preferred.

firsts or seconds? most are really just in need of some new soft parts and they'll be as good as new if you can find them

Thanks! I am keeping an eye on ebay, too, in case something interesting shows up. Either first of seconds, for educational purposes. In case anyone has something that's been unused, and rotting in the basement that you might want to unload.

Well, tbone just said exactly what I was going to. Most HOG's are still within their first few rebuild cycles so unless you find someone who has neglected their reg set and/or is getting out of diving or their disgusted spouse is selling, you probably won't have much luck there. Of course new HOG's are probably in the same price range that most "busted"apeks are...

I'd save the money and buy some beer for a local tech and spend some quality time with them. That worked for me and while they know I now service my own regs they are more than willing to help me out when needed.
