Going solo is a case of self efficency...
Instructors simply cannot rely on novice experience in a situation that may develop subaqua, In effect instructors dive relying on themselves only..

This attitude, IMO, is why so few learn to apply the buddy system or team diving techniques correctly. Nothing works if done poorly. An instructor diving with prepared students in a correctly organized class need not dive solo. I am not solo when I teach.
 
but I am often solo - by choice - when diving.

In many cases I prefer it. I hunt solo and I sometimes sightsee solo. Yes, I understand the risks, and both equip and dive accordingly.

I accept the risk that is attendant in this activity, but at the same time I accept risk diving solo I discard risk in doing so - the risk of a poor buddy injuring me!
