I'm going to Rodanthe, N.C. (outer banks) mid August for a week with the family and would like to get in 4-5 days of diving. Never been in the area before and it seems to be a bit out of the way. If anyone could give me any suggestions on dive operations that are resonably close, an hour drive or less from that area I would appreciate it? I have 300+ dives in most areas of the Caribbean and Florida but Bermuda is the most Northern dive I've done in 10yrs of diving so I don't even own a wet suit as I've never really needed one. It also seems I'm in for a 2-4hr boat ride so it seems it would be an all day affair. I was reading the latest chaps book put out by undercurrents on N. Carolina dive shops to get an idea of what I'd see but I don't know how reliable the opinions are in the book. Thanks for any advice.

Haven't dove there in 18 years but we have a trip chartered at Cape Lookout this summer in July and I can give you a few links.

http://www.nc-wreckdiving.com/ Basic Information site with very good information on dive sites and many links to dive operators.

These are the guys we are diving with http://www.discoverydiving.com/

Another really good dive operation http://www.olympusdiving.com/

I have only really researched the Cape Lookout area the first website provides many links to other areas

cape lookout's a looong way from rodanthe (which is pronounced road-AN-thee, just in case you haven't heard it said out loud).

i'd bet it's closer to obx diving in nag's head, but i'll bow to anyone else's special knowledge...gary? mel? help?

I would head south to Hatteras and check out http://outerbanksdiving.com/

You could also go N to Nags Head with http://obxdive.com/

Expect warmer water and better viz from Hatteras due to Gulf Stream waters. Both places can get you in the water. There is a bigger list of NC operators as a sticky in this forum once you decide if you want to go N or S.

The truth is that just about all of the NC dive charters are good, but people are sometimes put off when they don't find what they are expecting. No one will mess with your gear (or carry it), guide you around while pointing out critters, or serve fruit during your surface interval. Diving in NC is more of a self-sufficent thing where you handle your own gear, plan your own dive, and bring your own lunch.

Johnny at Outer Banks Diving in Hatteras is the best in the area, and not too far from Rodanthe. Plus the diving is typically clearer and warmer than the trips out of Nags Head. Besides, Johnny's a real professional, solid operation and as safe as anyone out there.
