Someone school me here,

What is the ideal position for the upper bolt snap on a DIR rigged deco or stage?

That’s not a trick question, I genuinely want to hear the thinking behind it. I would assume position is for trim but body types vary and therefore position should shift slightly too.

Good question.
Back in the day before commercially available stage kits we had to rig our own.
The kits you can buy are perfectly fine however they never get put on properly.

The big loop at the top is ment to be passed through itself around the valve and the eye of the bolt snap is to be an inch or less from the valve.

This brings the the nose of the bottle tight to the diver and naturally brings the ass of the bottle down

Look at every tech 1 or 2 diver and all the bottles are riding at 45 degrees or worse.

Additional fine tuning can be done by moving the left chest D ring up clocer to the collar bone .

Larry Green taught us this and aint no one as smooth in the water as Larry

This is the DIR forum.

Anyways, clip goes at the shoulder of the tank. Slightly smaller boltsnap than what’s shown in the above pic.

Reason: Having the clip too far up makes the chest d ring way to cluttered with two stages (their SPGs) and a backup light. Tanks will ride properly if the chest d rings are positioned correctly (often they are too low) and if the hip d ring is positioned correctly. If you need to snug up the tail of a stage, passing the bottom clip through the rigging to shorten it.

Pardon being pedantic but can you be more specific about “at the shoulder?”

Does that mean right where the cylindrical portion of the tank ends are somewhere a bit higher on the radiused portion ?

Right where it starts to curve on the way up. Maybe just a touch higher. Lookin at mine they all hit betweb the bottom and next-to-bottom row of stampings.

Just get it close and don’t sweat it too much.

This is how a bottle should fly.
