I'd actually prefer the crime rates, drugs, etc. (Means more fires to fight for me as bad as that sounds :) ) When I visit I'll look into residency requirements, etc. If I remember correctly I believe the pay was decent.

I never thought of meth labs as a positive. Maybe you should look at Modesto! :D

Check for housing costs as well as job opps every where you consider. Costs for living indoors are breathtaking anywhere near the coast.

modesto meth labs - Google Search

I thought I saw some TV documentary on some small town in the US with the highest number of some type of drug lab due to not much industry in the town?

My friend had his Grass Valley rental burn due to some type of drug use by tenants. freebasing maybe? Ether? CSAAA brought his rental up to code when the fire damage was repaired. It was much better than before the fire.

Diving around Sacramento?

Lake Tahoe......big, cold swimming pool. 2 hours from Sac. Sand and big rocks.

Mountain Lakes. Yawn.....unless you're into gold prospecting. Gives it a purpose. 2 or more hours from Sac.

Monterey Bay. Green water. Interactive mammals. 7mm wetsuitable year-round. 3 hours away. Colors come alive under the glare of a flashlight.

North Coast (Gerstle Cove, Ocean Cove). Just a degree or three colder than Monterey. Less crowded. 3 hours away.

Point Lobos. Beautiful. Crowded on weekends. 3 hours away.

Big Sur. Advanced. Equally beautiful. Take a boat from Monterey.

Six hours south by dive truck you have boats to the northern and southern Channel Islands, including Catalina. Water temps are usually 5-15 degrees warmer than the north state year round. Similar underwater topography to the north state. Watch out for the "aggressive Garibaldi" (inside joke).

No real direct flights to anywhere, but once you connect out of San Francisco, Oakland, or San Jose, Baja and Vancouver are only a 3, 3.5 hour flight; Hawaii, Cancun, and Cozumel are all five hours.

Within an hour or three of Sacramento you'll find great skiing; fantastic sightseeing; a hypnotic coastline; unbelievable backpacking; the laid back wine country; incredible motorcycling (coastal range and mountains); Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Reno, and San Francisco. Vegas is a short flight away. If you're into golfing, there are over 50 golf courses around Sacramento. And finally, let's not forget the meth labs of Modesto.

:rofl3:I agree.... And yup we love it here!!

Sounds awesome. Hopefully the "boss" likes it when we visit this summer. I plan on bringing my dive gear maybe I'll see some of you guys out.

Temperatures in Sacramento?

StreetDoctor........Sacramento winters to you, after living in Chicago, will feel like t-shirt and shorts weather. 40's and 50's during the day.

I flew into Chicago for a trade show one January years ago. It was a BEAUTIFUL day in the Windy City. The sun was shining and you could see forever. Looking out the window as the Friendly Skies coach approached O'Hare the ground had a light dusting of white. No problem, I had my best California winter overcoat with me. Plus, I've skied Tahoe in blowing snowstorms so I was ready for the cold. Curious though, the pilot talked about the high winds and potential for a bumpy landing but didn't mention anything about the temperature as we approached our destination.

The plane landed and pulled up to the jetway. The connection was made and the door swung open. I was sitting three rows from the exit when the blast of fresh air hit me in the face. My jaw dropped. It was at that moment the pilot came on the intercom and announced that the temperature was 5 degrees F with a wind chill of minus 20. I'm no mountain climber, but in that moment I felt a kinship with guys who climb Everest. That weekend contained the coldest hours I've ever spent in the sun. The air actually twinkled in the sunlight due to ice crystals riding the wind.

StreetDoctor, anybody who ever complains about the winters in California doesn't know the meaning of winter. You do.

BTW, Chicago is one of the cities with direct flights out of Sacramento. So if you ever get in the mood for flying home in January, you'll be there in 4.5 hours. Oh joy.

Timely thread! Thanks for the info!

Due to the economy, I've closed my private practice as a land surveyor and taken a position as Director of surveying with a firm in Roseville. I'm moving up tomorrow.

I've always wanted to dive in Lake Tahoe. Monterey and Point Lobos have help a fascination for me, as well.

I was originally certified in lakes in Upstate New York 34 years ago. While I prefer salt water, murky lake water is an acceptable alternative for those of us who suffer from a sever addiction to breathing compressed air while floating well below the surface of waters.

So...what are the good Dive Clubs around the Sac'to/Roseville area? What are the trips like? What's the boat diving like in Monterey? Any good dive shops with pools? Any shops looking for an experienced DM (PADI)?

See y'all in Sac'to tomorrow afternoon!

Welcome to Roseville! :D What part of Roseville are you moving too?

The only real dive club I've heard of in the area is Dolphin Divers. From what I understand they are a pretty active group. Shop wise, you can't beat Dolphin's selection and price.

If you're the kind who supports small LDS mom and pop type shops I'd recommend Fish Eye Scuba in Folsom, or Andy's Scuba world.

Josh I didn't know you were so into Chemistry?
It's still too early for me to formulate humorous response to this, Ben. :coffee: I am pretty good at eyeballing the lemonade mix:water ratio, and am on the "list" of people who buy Sudafed, but wouldn't know a meth lab if it bit me in the a**. I can, however, spot a tweeker from a mile away. Occupational hazard.

There's no shortage of meth labs in the Central Valley. Sacramento has their fair share, too, so let's not bash Modesto too much (even though it was rated one of the worst places to live in a recent book...) It's not that bad. I recently bought a house here and have awesome neighbors, which is what really counts.

Back on topic. I guess I was trying to point out to the OP that the Central Valley might not meet the average person's perception of what CA is like.

Oh, and Dolphin Scuba in Sac is an awesome store. It's HUGE. You'll like it.
