We were able to snorkle with 3 or 4 of them last Nov in Cabo. They are an awesome sight. Very large, very powerful yet gentle animal. We were in the water with them for several hours. They were feeding. They stood on their tales, sucking in water. You could see the vortex of water circle into their mouths and out their gills. Totally awesome!!!

Here in Okinawa there is a bay netted off with 2 of them in captivity and you can pay to go dive with them , hopefully in the next few weeks im going to get a dive in there . Its the same place they did the dive for the jackass movie.

In Aug I did a live aboard in Sea of Cortez. On the last day we splashed hoping to see hammer heads or a whale shark. Ascending on the anchor line I looked up and saw a whale shark circling around our boat. We were all petting it and getting rides. The thing was like a puppy and loved the attention. I got close and looked it in the eye, I could see the eye looking me up and down. When I backed away, it swam away from everyone and started following me! A bunch of other divers showed up and started snorkeling around the fish(they got pissed we were petting the animal) but the whale shark seemed annoyed by all the splashing and the fact they refused to touch it, so the huge fish swam off into the blue. About an hour later my buddy and I did a second dive and the whale shark spotted us, swam with us, then escorted us back to the boat! All in all, the two best dives of my life!

One of my buddies saw one off of West Palm Beach, FL and somebody posted a link to his video of it back in January of 04. I'll try and find the link, but you can probably do a search and get it before I'll have a chance.

Never had the pleasure of diving with one yet,
Grier
