An investigation has been launched into the circumstances that led to the death of a male 65 year-old United States tourist who was on a diving trip off Jost Van Dyke today, June 25.

Police said that the man was pronounced dead at Peebles Hospital this afternoon after experiencing apparent difficulties while in the water near Sandy Pit.

According to Police, the deceased and his wife of Virginia, USA were diving with a local dive company around 10:30am when he alerted others in the group that he was experiencing difficulties.

Police said that the man was assisted to the surface, but by then was unresponsive.

Police have withheld the name of the deceased until his family overseas has been notified.

The couple had been staying on Jost Van Dyke since Friday, June 22.
