While maybe not the best for the airports, a Rubbermaid ActionPacker makes for a nice gear storage case. You can even sit on them while getting dressed or fill them fill of water to wash out your gear. They've got hard sides and protect the stuff inside, too.
 
Before diving I had a pair of Delsey wheeled-hardpack suitcases that I didn't use anymore due to weight. It just got too heavy if used for a couple of weeks of regular vacation packing. But I found out that it could carry all my dive gear and at least a week's worth of shorts and t-shirts without going overweight. Hard-pack protection for the airplane trip. I transfer to a mesh bag for the boat.
