How guaranteed are the whale sharks around Coral Bay or Ningaloo Reef or whatever in May? I'm going to be in Perth next May for a week or so and wondering whether it's worth making the trip up.

Whale sharks are expected to be steady throughout the month of May at both Ningaloo Reef locations - Coral Bay in the southern area and Exmouth in the northern area. It is rare to miss a day during May at either place, but it can happen.

You need to realise that you are coming to see wild animals in their natural environment and no one has any control over them. They are also impossible to predict from one day to the next - some days you'll have 10+ in one area and the next day there will only be a single shark! It doesn't happen often, but it can. Most of the operators work together very well to ensure even on days with low numbers of sharks that everyone gets some good sightings of the beastie.

Manta rays should also be steady from Coral Bay throughout the month; mantas will start to get steady from Exmouth near the end of May although there will be the odd sighting all month usually.

I always recommend that if whale sharks are truly a priority, book two days out with them. The worst that can happen is you have two spectacular days :D If they are a nice thing, but not essential, a single day may be enough for you.
