My parents both certified last year at age 60 and didn't have any problems at all!

P.S. Getting checked out for health concerns prior to diving is a good idea for everyone, but the younger folk are less likely to actually do it.
 
only problem will be the butt kicking you will give yourself for not doing it years earlier,see ya on the reef.
 
Just dive it!

As others have said, if your physician gives you the medical clearance, take the course. The worst thing that could happen is that you don't like the underwater environment. You will never know until you give it your best attempt.

Visit you local dive shop and look for a good instructor.
