So far, it seems that air consumption is the over-riding cause, as I would expect. This would be the most common problem for less experienced divers...

... and even experienced divers who have yet to learn to breathe underwater without a gas supply.

On deeper dives with the appropriate nitrox mix, air and NDL often fight it out for control of the dive. With a multilevel strategy, air wins out more frequently than does NDL. When only square profiles are available, NDL often prevails.
