I don't really believe in many of the various specialties (boat, night, deep, u/w naturalist). These are all things that you learn by going out and doing, not from reading it is a book.

That depends on how much you get sucked into paying for the book and if one can read.

OW, June 2005. Went directly into AOW, because I was afraid to get in the water with anyone but an instructor. Finished AOW about the same diver I went into it, except I'd now been to 100 feet. Went immediately into the PPB, Deep and Nav specialties, because my diving still sucked. Finished PPB and Deep before the end of September, and I still sucked.

OW OCT 2010 :)
Boat Diver Specialty in Nov 2010 (because I was also afraid to dive without an instructor!)
UW Nav later this month (still Nov 2010) same reason as boat
AOW and Drysuit Dec 2010 (still the same reason, hopefully will suck less!)
Ideally:
Search and Recovery Dec 2010
Rescue and Nitrox Jan 2011

I'm doing the same thing, taking classes until I feel comfortable without an instructor! I hope that feeling goes away at some point! That said, my instructor is awesome and gives great advice and makes me feel really safe, so I would take them eventually anyway!
