Self taught at 13 in 1957, certified in 1970. I have dived pretty much continuously for the last 51 years.
 
I got my OW class as an '04 christmas gift and did the cert dives in January of '05
 
28 years old in March of 1982, open water cert dives off San Clemente island out of San Diego, CA with Thunder Island Divers. we did do a 'celebration' night dive to 90' which would probably not be recommended nowadays but it seems that dive training has come a long way since then. My two boys got training about two years ago, at age 13 and 15, and it seems a lot more involved now days, in fact, my 13 year didn't receive his cert despite passing all the skills sets.
