My wife bought an Oceanic wrist-mount compass for me for Christmas. I have not had a chance to get it in the water yet, but noticed something about it when I was playing with it the other day. There is a small bubble that is floating above the face of the compass. Should it be there? I don't remember seeing bubbles in compasses before.

Is there a circle in the center of the compass face? If so, the bubble may actually be used to level the compass during use. It's not exactly common anymore, but the older compasses sometimes had this 'feature'. Good compasses will operate without being perfectly level, but older ones and less expensive ones these days are more sensative to not being level and will sometimes not read 'true' if they're not.
