I like the camera, and as I've only really used 'point and shoot' film cameras before I found it fairly straight forward to get used to.

It takes great pics above and below water, and the 'video clip' mode is better quality than I was expecting.

It goes through batteries quite fast, so having a battery charger and a couple of sets of NiMH AA batteries are essential accessories - a set of these would last me 2 dives / 1 day.

I've read on this forum that production of this camera has been discontinued though, I think the followup model is the A720 or something?

The following pics taken with the UW Mode selected, otherwize Auto. No external strobes, just the internal flash, and I have the WP-DC12 housing.

I sort of like this picture taken with the 570IS, I don't know why, I just do.

    And this one:

Both taken this past May at Mammoth Spring.

    Canon 570IS #1 with Inon D2000 and 165AD FE and DC-12:

Canon 570IS #2 installed in Ikelite housing, I am still working on this one:

It will get another D2000 (for dual strobes) and an Inon 100 WAL with dome port and a tray.

I only have 5 dives with the A570 and think that it is a great first camera. Using the Canon wp-dc12 housing with internal flash. It has full manual controls, however I am still using the UW mode. I am having fun experimenting with different settings. The first 3 pictures were taken in Belize and the Orange star was in the Puget Sound. Bob

I've used this camera in a canon housing a few times. I'll attach a few photos from Puetro Vallarta Mexico. In these I had t use the built-in flash with diffuser as it was low light and I didn't have a strobe. I would say that you should, if possible, use a full external strobe with this camera. I find that it does well in areas of high light levels, but the small CCD sensors just can't do well in low-light conditions.

I would advise anyone using this camera, or many digicams, to get accustomed to using custom white balance and bring something white while diving. Since you can't record RAW files easily,* it is good to get the colors as close as possible in the camera. With a strobe this isn't so bad, but without the colors change with depth.

On the trip to mexico I had WB problems. It was a particularly bad time as there was a plankton bloom so the water was green. Every few feet the color would change so much that the photos were beyond repair without a good WB. Fortunately the DM had white fins, so getting a reference for custom WB was easy (a dive slate would work too.)

For what it's worth, I would recommend anyone considering this camera, or similar, to consider a G9 or G10 instead. Many pro photographers choose to use the G9 as their compact camera for personal use. The cost is a bit more, but you are much less likely to have the camera limit you. By the time you add a housing and strobes, the price difference isn't as bad. Myself, I'm moving to dSLR after only a year in the A570. I just want better photos and lower light that a digicam can't do.

    * there is a Hack that allows this for those who are adventurous enough.

Only to say THANKS A LOT !
I've bought my new A-570IS + WP-DC12. I've only did a test in the practice pool up to 3.5 meters depth.
I'm new to diving (only 10 logged dives) and in a few weeks I will do an onboard-life for 3 days in which I will also check deep-diving and dry-suit.
I'm more than exited waiting the day to dive. Also I will use for the first time my new photo gear.
I have also little experience with UW photo, so, I expect that my first shots will be unreproduceable or even a shame.
I see those beautiful shots of beautiful dives you post and I have a little of healthy envy.

Well, I did the 3 days onboard, diving in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, in a place called "Pardelas". You can see the place in Google Earth (lat=-42.6207988404, lon=-64.2521392531).
The weather was cold for this time of the year, average 15 degrees. The water temp was among 11 to 13 degrees, That's why we had to dive with dry suit. The weather was also windy. So we could only do 5 dives (2 of them at night).
We saw several times whales all around, though it's forbiden to dive with whales.
One of the dives was with sea lions.

I've used my photo gear for the first time. Canon A-570IS + WP-DC12.
As the water was so cold, the batteries lasted pretty short. Only something like 100 shots without built-in flash (only day photos). The batteries I used were a pair of fresh Duracell Alcaline AA.

    I'm attaching some samples.
The photos with the sea-lions are very bad, as they made such a disturbance that all the sand of the bottom was risen and visibility turned pretty bad.
