Does any know if you can use a generic IR port to communicate with the Aladin 2G Dive computer. I purchased a generic one that got good reviews on-line (and cost only $10.00) but the software on the computer won't recognize the dive computer even though I can see that the two are "talking." Suggestions?

I bought a generic one for $5 and it worked. Only problem was that it crashed the laptop after every download. If memory serves me right, I believe I read that the IR dongle has to have certain characteristics to work with the Tec 2G but I can't remember what they were. You might try a search here on SB with the right keywords as I believe there was a discussion about this a few years back.

My new USB-IR adapter just arrived today. I was trying to find one, working under Windows 7. I bought it @ Monoprice dot com (search for INFRARED, USB Infra-Red Wireless Adapter IrDA - 4Mbps Transfer Rate (FIR mode)). The price is 7.84$ + 2$ delivery.
Windows 7 found it in seconds. No needs to install any drivers. Once installed, I pointed out my Aladin 2G, and IR icon appeared on it immediately. I started SmartTrack, and it detected my computer immediately. Data transfer was quick. Highly recommend.

I also bought a USB infrared dongle on EBay for $11.49 from China with free shipping. I have Windows 7 and installed the drivers in compatabilty mode. Works great.

I also have a generic IR dongle that I picked up off ebay. I used it with my Tec 2G and it worked, but I found I had to hold the dongle at just the right angle and distance from the window for the two computers to communicate. I now use it with my Smart TEC and it communicates much easier. I think the 2G may have a smaller window than the Smart TEC.
