There seems to be plenty of discussions for ScubaPro reg maintenance, I thought I would share what I am doing with some other brands. Doing this right without having to hunt down OEM service kits, Replacement parts...etc. I have a bunch of MARES Regs so I will start there. Please feel free to add to the thread, correct me, or otherwise participate. As usual...standard disclaimer, I am not responsible for anything that happens as a result of you reading this. I only want to share what I am doing, not give you instructions for you to use to injure or kill yourself. Do so at your own risk.

I will make a separate post for each section of info. More diagrams coming soon

At the moment I will not be doing a step by step how to because that is easily covered in the fine publications by Airspeed press and Scuba Tools. They are great books, worth the money, get them. Support the people who are making a lot of the DIY activities possible.

I use scuba pro regs in all my dives. Not using scuba pro complicates things, why put up with the disadvantages if there's no good reason to do it... :shakehead:

:D I kid, I kid! Commendable mission. I believe the more knowledge gets brought up in the open the better it I'll be for end consumers that take the time to pursue this knowledge. I do believe the end result is better, safer divers. BTW I have no Mares regs, but I do use Zeagle and Sherwood regs when I use slinged bottles -- I have nothing against people who use other brands.

This post is for the MARES MR12 1st stage.
100_3074.jpg

This 1st stage is fairly common and very simple to work on. The OEM rebuild kit is identified as MARES part # 46186150 "Service Kit" . This is for the MARES MR12/MR 12 Long/ DACOR D12/SPORASUB S30... Yoke and DIN types so there will be some parts not used. It includes the following parts.

46185015 "Retaining Ring" 1EA
46185014 "Sintered Filter" 1EA
46185038 "Back-up ring" 1EA
46110106 "O-Ring" 4EA
46110101 "O-Ring" 1EA
46110108 "O-Ring" 2EA
46110117 "O-Ring" 2EA
46110107 "O-Ring" 1EA
46110203 "O-Ring" 1EA

I will start with what is not included in the kit. MARES decides not to include the HP seat with this kit. The MARES part # is 46185002. This seat is identical to the US Divers/Aqualung Part # 105940 used in the Conshelf and Titan type regs, also and to the 3rd party Trident part # A-244. Below are pictures of all of these side by side for comparison. They are in order from left to right, the old MARES HP seat, the new MARES HP seat, the Aqualung HP seat, and the Trident HP seat

MARES also does not include the diaphragm in the kit which is MARES part #46185022. You can use the Trident Part # A163, it is a perfect replacement. I am also starting to look at making these from sheet stock much in the same way that AWAP did with the soft seats. As long as you get the dimensions right which are 34.8mm diameter and 1.65mm thick

ok, back to the parts kit...

46185015 "Retaining Ring" 1EA
This item is also the same as the Aqualung/US Divers Part # 863051 and is basically just an HO type Internal SS Snap ring. It is easily available from McMaster Carr as part # 91580A151 http://www.mcmaster.com/#internal-snap-rings/=ad8k8p

46185014 "Sintered Filter" 1EA
This item is also similar to the Aqualung/US Divers filter 105106. It is a simple disc type SS sintered filter, 1/2" diameter 1/16" thick. I also found suitable replacements at McMaster Carr as part # 9446T32 http://www.mcmaster.com/#sintered-filters/=adewji. I used the 5 micron type since I found a local reg tech who told me that was typical pore size for SCUBA regs. There isn't really a restriction at our flow rates so why not have the extra filtration. They are cheap enough at $11 or so for QTY 6. I also found suitable replacements at Northeast SCUBA supply buy Flat Filter and Star Retainer at northeastscubasupply.com - Regulators - Regulator Service Kits - Flat Filter and Star Retainer - Northeast Scuba Supply

46185038 "Back-up ring" 1EA
This item is a simple PFTE split Back-up ring for AS568A O-Ring size 005. You can easily get this from McMaster Carr as well as Part # 9560K31. The strange thing is that this backs up a size -006 O-Ring in the MARES reg, but they do use the -005 back up ring. They use it becasue it works and it fits. Pictures of the OEM kit part and the McMaster part that I call for side by side and one on top of the other.

100_3115.jpg

The remaining kit parts are O-Rings, only one of which is used on the MR12 and that is

46110101 "O-Ring" 1EA, This is a VITON -006, also easy to get at McMaster Carr as part # 9464K11. This is a Durometer 75 hardness. Some people are using harder O-Rings or PFTE for this application but I think the 75 is fine considering that I can easily and cheaply replace it whenever I need to.

Just for information sake the other O-rings are as follows, some are for the hose ends so not really part of the 1st stage.

46110106 "O-Ring" 4EA is a British Standard Extended Series -610
46110108 "O-Ring" 2EA is a British Standard Extended Series -611
46110117 "O-Ring" 2EA is a British Standard Extended Series -614
46110107 "O-Ring" 1EA is an AS568A -011
46110203 "O-Ring" 1EA is an AS568A -008

The AS568A series can easily be found at McMaster Carr. The British Standard Extended Series I was able to get from Seal Jet Sealjet of Ohio - A New Force In Seals! in fairly small quantities with a minimum order.

Please forgive the formatting, I will clean up the post in the next day or two, it's late tonight. I will also add good photos very soon as well.

This section is for the Nikos 2nd stage. Also a common and easy to work on reg, with easy to source parts. The Primary and Octo are identical except for the color. Same is true for the "nitrox" versions...all the same. In the Scuba tools Regulator Savvy manual this reg is beautifully explained as a Dual Adjustment demand valve. The scuba tools inline adjustment tool works very well for setup adjustment in the "hex key" configuration. Really, this reg is essentially similar to the Axis and Akros models and exactly the same as the Dacor Fury types.

The OEM rebuild kit is identified as MARES part # 46186164 "Service Kit" and contains the following items.

46110106 "Mouthpiece Clamp"
46184006 "Exhaust Valve"
46184062 "Poppet Seat"
46185051 "Locknut, demand Lever"
46110106 "O-Ring" 1EA
46110205 "O-Ring" 2EA
46110211 "O-Ring" 1EA
46110215 "O-Ring" 1EA
46110220 "O-Ring" 1EA
46110225 "O-Ring" 2EA

46110106 "Mouthpiece Clamp"
This is your basic zip tie. If you cannot source this yourself then step away from your regulator and call your local SCUBA shop to see when their tech can service your reg for you.

46184006 "Exhaust Valve"
Typical silicone exhaust valve. I have not had to replace one of these yet. No matter how nasty they look they always come out of the ultrasonic looking and feeling brand new. If you had to buy a replacement though it looks like the Trident Part # RP34 is a fit with a 33mm diameter and nearly identical structure.

46184062 "Poppet Seat"
This is the classic and common LP seat. It is "awapable" as a DIY Item with a 9/32" punch from McMaster Carr as Part #3424A22 and is made from 1/16" EPDM sheet available from McMaster Carr as Part # 8985K225. You could also use the adhesive back version of the same thing if you wanted to, I have seen them come in the OEM kits both ways. Follow this link to see some discussion about it. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/re...7-generic-lp-seats-where-buy.html#post3941619

46185051 "Locknut, demand Lever"
This is a simple M3 Nylock SS nut. It is available from McMaster Carr as part # 94205A220.

The remaining items are O-Rings, all VITON. Sized as follows...

not used on the NIKOS reg itself but as a hose end connector is the first in the list
46110106 "O-Ring" 1EA is a British Standard Extended Series -610 available from seal jet, see link above

46110205 "O-Ring" 2EA is an AS568A -010 you should only need one of these in the reg, the other is a hose end.
46110211 "O-Ring" 1EA is an AS568A -014
46110215 "O-Ring" 1EA is an AS568A -013
46110220 "O-Ring" 1EA is an AS568A -016
46110225 "O-Ring" 2EA is an AS568A -017

...more coming soon

Slamfire, you had me with the Spoiler. I have some ScubaPro as well but decided to start discussions about other regs I have. Hope someone finds it useful

Good info Chris.
Any chance you are close to me in Raleigh? I have a tool I would like to test out on a MR-12.
The parts you list will also fit the old Voit/AMFs which came before the MR-12.

Great!. Herman, I am in Hillsborough. About 10 minutes from the Duke Campus. Closest other landmark is the intersection of I-85 and 147. Which tool do you want to test out? I'm sure we can meet up.

I make and sell a HP assembly tool for USD/AL regs that I think would also work for the MR-12. Basically, you set the tool on top of the reg, drop the seat, spring, balance chamber, upper spring, filter and clip into the tool, press it all down with a plunger and it clicks into place. If you are pressing all that stuff down by hand and holding the clip with pliers, this tool will be a godsend to you.

I am just outside of Apeks so we are not far apart. I will PM you so we can set up something.

Afishianado,

Thanks for posting the pictures of the various HP poppets for the MR-12 (they will also work in the MR-22).

If I get a chance this weekend, I'll post a picture of the current Mares "Tri-Material" poppet from one of my MR-12's or MR22's. It is essentially the same as all of the poppets you've shown, just a differernt surface material (supposedly more durable?).

Best wishes.

Great info Afishianado....thanks.
