Had the same thing happen to me in Kona years ago. The local emergency center was useless, [...] Hopefully the Kona Emergency center has better trained personnel these days.

Dream on.

They're even more worthless these days with the departure of the one physician with
a familiarity with diving medicine (she's opened a private practice).

Short version: call DAN. Longer version: if you're here in Kona, and suspect DCS,
call DAN, and shove the phone into the ear of the ER physician; they'll be useless
otherwise.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and some notion about what happened rockjock -

Jay,

Bummer to hear about this. It is never good when it happens but I think by the number of posts that have followed and the interest it has generated here on SB you can see that we all can learn from your case.

It sounds like the guys at MDSU rock..... so stoked you got great care over there. It got me thinking about the amount of divers on this island who do NOT have military affiliation.

So, like others I am stressing the need for DAN insurance. The point was made earlier that some doctors may avoid sending a case like this to the chamber for bottom line reasons. While this subject could prompt an entire new discussion, let's leave it at that.

Some numbers for divers to write down in your logbook....

DAN Emergency Number: 919 684 8111 (24 hours)
DAN Non Emergency/ Q & A Line: (919) 684-2948, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
DAN Divers Alert Network - Scuba Diving and Dive Safety Association

On Oahu...... Kuikini Medical Center (Hyperbaric Treatment Center) 808-587-3425

Keep us all posted on your condition and buy Sherm and Jo dinner..... sounds like the responded like the professionals that they are!

Aloha,

G

DAN is NOT the only insurance out there. Check out Dive Assure which is PRIMARY coverage, where DAN is secondary coverage.

I wonder though if this is some urban myth, because I never hear of anybody being denied chamber treatment, do you?

that place is quite interesting...suffice it to say most of their patients will not be too outspoken anytime soon. lol...if anybody is going to voice any concerns, I guess it will be up to you all. (since you can speak and all...) When I was over there it was full of head trauma and wound healing for the bedridden. And they had certain *other problems* as well, not a cheery place.

hmm, I thought the military used a different chamber, so why the popcorn?
