A buddy and I were diving on a dive boat Saturday. Would it have been wrong of me to ask the guy smoking a cigar if he we put it out? Being a non-smoker I try to to make a big deal of smoking but considering the combination of 3-5 foot seas and breathing in the diesel fumes it was making us and a few others on the boat sick.

If he was up wind yes, if down wind (ie. he was on the lee side or stern of the boat while underway), you might be over sensitive (IMHO).

I think it's unreasonable for smokers to pollute our air anywhere, and a diveboat is no exception.

I agree with Geoff. I don't think that smoking in confined spaces (such as buildings or on dive boats) is fair to non-smokers.

Be a man! Take a great big whiff, barf all over him, and then say "sorry dude I guess the smoke just pushed me over the edge."

I wish to say ... as a smoker .. I'm with Steve.

some places it isn't appropriate.. and if you are in a public place you should ask those around you.

Depends on how tough the guy looks. If he looks like a weakling/push-over get on his case and read him the riot act. If he looks like someone who would like to kick your *** on general principals I'd say leave him alone.

As a former smoker (15 months smokefree) I tried to be considerate of others. I would head to the back of the boat, but would still ask others (crew first) if it was ok, I would tell those around me to let me know if it bothered them.

I vote for the barf idea too. Also, as an ex-smoker even I found cigars to be exceptionally offensive.
