Ber, that's above and beyond. Did you carry their gear for them too?

Sounds like it to me. I would have made them take their gloves off and fix it themselves. Fixing something like that for a student only makes them more dependent on you as an instructor.

I think an eyebrow piercing would require some extra searching for the right mask and ditto with a septal pierce. But a labret should not be a problem. It may get in the way with a hood.
Whatever the piercing, the student could always use a retainer while diving.

I was wondering if a lip piercing could be seen as a safety device for lung over-expansion? It would be like a purge valve, no need to exhale because it will leak the over-pressured air when needed :D (of course, assuming that you keep your epiglottis open). Though I would never make a hole through my body on purpose, even if it would prove to be useful.

nipple rings would suck with a wetsuit... lol

i only have my ears pierced, but i usually take them out before a dive anyway because my mask strap has got caught on one of them before when taking my mask off.

There will be no problem with a labret piercing and air. Most studs have a flat circular backing and post, and a ball or jewel is screwed onto the post from the "out"side.

There can be some (very very minor) entanglement hazard with a regulator, which will be extremely rare to see. However, that risk can be further minimized by wearing a stud with a ball (as opposed to a jewel or spike or anything that can catch).

If one is unsure of, and concerned about their equipment, they should simply remove the labret jewelry. The hole should not close up entirely for the duration of the dive, but be sure to replace it afterwards. And the hole will not result in an air or water leak under normal and/or pressurized conditions, due to the nature of the tissue. The skin will act as a valve of sorts. Any forced leak will most likely be an exhalation of air.

This is, of course, assuming that standard gauge sizes are used (from 16-12 ga.), and that the piercing is fully healed. A fresh piercing will run a higher risk of contracting infection, and will close up in a short amount of time if the jewelry is removed.

If it doesn’t leak while swimming, it’s unlikely to be a problem while diving. Air pressure in the mouth is approximately equalized to ambient pressure.
But so what if it does leak? - A little extra water in the mouth is easily ejected through the reg. A little air leaking out should be insignificant.

(I was only a DM at the time) It wasn't scuba related, he noticed the problem when they were next in line to enter and called me over to help fix it. That's not building reliance on an instructor, I was the only person not in scuba gear in the immediate area and the best choice for getting the problem taken care of quickly. It could just as easily have been my non-diving mother-in-law fixing it for him since we were diving at her lake house. (Yes, she would have helped)

The first time I ran across tongue balls was in Bankok. Lots of the bar girls had them. To those of you who don't know the reasoning behind the tongue ball, they are there to enhance the pleasure of a certain kind of activity which I can't mention on this forum. Since then, whenever I have seen a male with a tongue ball, this comes to mind and makes me wonder about their orientation. I hope that this doesn't affend anyone with a tongue ball or get me in trouble with the moderator who just might have one.
