I know the answer to this question varies depending on the condition and health of the individual. I just want to know a general age that a normal person in average to good health can safely scuba dive at. In other words, at what age is a person considered too old to dive or should stop diving?

hubby has had students in their mid 70's

whats too old to dive? my 2cents, when they are a danger to themselves or others (and ive seen lots of 20-40's in this category too)

if someone was physically unable to put their gear together, carry it ect then i would really question why they persist but if they have buddies prepared to do it - who am i to judge

cheers

I'd say keep diving as long as you're able to enjoy it, but one should really stop when their participation puts themselves or others at undue risk--regardless of age.

There will be as many different answers as there are different people, I'd guess.

About five minutes after they stop breathing on the average! Then it's a recovery and they won't let them go back in!

Cinematographer/photographer Leni Riefenstahl was scuba diving and taking photos underwater at 100.

Thanks, the reason I ask is because I am 41 and considering getting certified. I just want to know how many good years I got left in me.:)

Depends upon how long you feel comfortable diving... In other words, as long as it does not become a burden on you, you can dive. There is no age limit to diving. After a certain age (subjective by "health appearance" and "mental appearance") Some instructors might have you get a checkup through a qualified doctor in order to get certified. After that, it is all up to you

Edit to add:
As you age, you may find it difficult to don the gear or carry the gear for that matter. I know of a 79 year old man who just wanted to get away from the grandkids (Seems he and his wife took on the task of raising them)... He wanted some quiet time at the bottom of his pool. The doctor OK'd him to get certified, and that was that...

One last Edit:
All these pictures were taken while diving "after" I turned 41 ...
