Of all you folks that have visited Roatan, how many of you managed to leave your respective resort and tour the island? visit the West End or West Bay? Thanks in advance for your response!

1 We had a fun time on the West End.

If you do not take some time to see what Roatan has to offer besides the particular resort you are staying, you are shorting yourself.

Yes - but just visited the island west of COCO View/Fantasy Island.

Have not been to the east....

Would I recommend it - 100% yes

Always tour and explore any island/country etc, we vacation in.

Don't see the point of being a guilded pet locked in a resort getting spoon fed a watered down Americanized view the 200 yrds you can see around you between yourself and the fence line.

Rent a car and live a little bit have an adventure, the locals where ever you are usually don't bite (much).

Was there twice this year and rented a car for a few days both times. Also paid a taxi driver for a one day tour and it was well worth the money. Stayed at Luna Beach both times, and would love to return this January. Also did a 1/2 day boat tour. Loved it and will do it again. We dive lots but we also did a Zip-line tour, and visited quite a bit of the island.

I lived on Roatan (North East End) for several months. I traveled the entire length many times. The drive itself is spectacular. I highlty recommend it. If your concerned about driving and maybe you should be, a taxi trip across the island won't break you. Visit west end to see the typical tourist traps (lots of fun though) and then visit Paya Bay on the other end of the island (6 miles down dirt road). Stop at The View for a meal and you'll love the view and the meal.
