At any one time around the world there are over four dozen ships operating taking what they can from sunken wreck sites around the world. If we're talking about an environment that is able to be controlled then I believe it does make sense to leave some things behind for others to see. If we are talking about areas that are not able to be controlled than usually the rule of thumb is first come first serve. If I don't take it somebody else will is the bottom line.

Yeah, your stance is as bad as the Caribbean "treasure hunters" who mailbox shipwrecks...

Sickening that people destroy wreck sites because "they" found it. And the galleons your referenced(I would have to look up the names) where not lost. The Spanish knew where they had sunk, and at least one had been salvaged in antiquity. They where angry because someone came along and raided a wreck of one of there warships, in VIOLATION of maritime law. Guys like Mel Fisher can drop off the planet tomorrow and it wouldn't be soon enough.
 
Actually, speaking for txAggie08 as well as myself, I suspect that you've got that wrong. I'd bet that we (me, txAggie08 and Mel) have, all three, lived the things that you can only dream about. It's pretty bad when you have to reach so far as to list the Spiegel Grove as an "Exploration Dive," don't you think?

Mel fisher lived what you can only dream about


Mel Fisher is a thieving grave robber, with no respect for science or history. I don't dream about DESTROYING important ship wrecks to find trinkets to hoard for myself thanks.

THAT is lowered over a wreck, and the ships prop is used to decimate the remains of the vessel so that all the metal objects fall back to center. And what do the geniuses that do this say? "We really don't see how anyone can learn anything from these wrecks, all we find is a conical hole in the ground".....


I HATE treasure hunters. Let me emphasis that again, HATE. Either leave it alone, or pickup a minimum of a masters in Archaeology, and go to work for a university or firm.

BTW thal, I've seen some of the artifacts that A&M/INA has from Phoenix if I remember right. La Belle is interesting to, I've got some neat photographs of the items the Wilder lab did resin 3-d models of.
 
I think your being a little hard on Mel, he was a friend when I lived in Key West, so I'm a little biased the other way, but I know what you mean, it's kinda hard to do good archeology after the grave robbers have wheeled through.

So you are saying is the Government of Canada picks what wrecks and when it wants to protect them? The Fontana North of the Blue Water Bridge in between USA and Canada was wrecked on the Canada side and was owned by a US shipping company,and was told by the government of Canada to remove it or dynamite it. And that was the same with the Jolite down stream. Now you are telling me Canada wants to protect these wrecks after they wanted them destroyed?
And what is with the funny lines above your A's and O's do you need a new keyboard?

The coast guard blew up a bunch of wrecks as "hazards to navigation" that are now included in our (Michigan's) underwater preserves. Sometimes common scense is a little late to the party.
