with all of the violence going on in Mexico... is Belize in any way affected by it? are they seing a spill over into the country or do they contain thier coarders well? thanks

Not in any way related to Belize and no issues with the Mexican violence which is based along the US Border towns and is fueled by drug cartels fighting over drug turf to get the drugs into the USA.

Belize has no connection to the Violence in mexico at all

Thanks Gaz, I'm glad o hear it...

Belize unfortunately DOES have a connection with the problems in Mexico which have escalated in recent years.

The Belize Tourism Board and website funded by the local authorities will not tell you this of course. Belize is on the path to the world's biggest market for those substances thus logic will tell you there is a connection.

About a year ago a Mennonite Building Contractor was offed in broad daylight in the Corozal Free Zone. Mexicans were arrested with high power weapons on the Mexican side.

Also about a year ago about 7 men including a judge disappeared at sea - believed to have been a hit by the Mexicans.

We have nowhere the level of problems Mexico has except for a high homicide rate mainly in Belize city which is believed to be related to turf battles between drug gangs.

The U.S. military is currently testing its new attack / spy helicopter drone the Hummingbird in our pristine Mountain Pine Ridge much to the annoyance of resort owners and Belizeans in the area. It is believed this will be used to spy on substance traffickers in Belize and the borders with Mexico and Guatemala.

I concure there is a connection with drugs heading through Belize to get to the US but with very infreqent reports of violence as per your posting (a Year ago) but its NOTHING like the carnage that goes on daily in the border towns of Mexico along the US border and that is reported daily with up to 15 Murders daily that goes on there.

Additionally I think its night and day between whats happening aong those border towns and whats happening in Belize you just cant compare the 2

Up to 15 Murders daily aloing the border towns and 2 incidents a year ago in Belize

Belize is no where near to what mexico is experiencing.

Very pleased to agree with Gaz on this. Belize does have its problems to be sure, but where doesn't? Outside Belize City the most serious crime you're likely to come across is a stolen bicycle. In San Pedro we still have so little crime that even that gets reported in the papers. But of course we don't have NO crime.

On my last early morning walk through downtown Belize City last month, I decided to walk down Queens Street past the police station. I was about to cut through what looked like a back alley towards Fort Street, when a woman started warning me not to go back there as it was "too dangerous."

I jokingly asked her if she would act as my bodyguard and to my surprise she agreed.

So with her leading the way we cut through the alley just to the right of this hotel, which is just past the Queen Street Police Station.

I have to admit the alley got a little intense just past that second blue building on the right, and I was glad I had an escort even though she barely came up to my belly button.

You .... are nuts.

What you did is not any different than walking through a gang neighborhood in a place like LA or Detroit. It's not that you're an easy mark strolling past their door. It's that in gang neighborhoods, strolling by is not much different than pissing on their lawn while giving them the finger.

Have you been to Belize City? No I'm not calling you out or doubting your assesment. I too live in Ottawa and if you;ve been to Belize Cirty could you provide a comparison between that and say Vanier, Ritchie Street/Britannia, Caldwell etc?

Nuts? I don't think so, but I will admit to pushing the envelope on that one.

In my defense, it was about 6:15 in the morning, so the odds were good that the bangers were all in bed after another hard night of slinging crack and beating, chopping and robbing each other.

With the police station right behind me and Fort Street right in front of me, I was always within sprinting distance of safety, except for maybe the very middle part referenced above, which was plainly Cripsville. Had I been alone, I would have turned back and quickly made my way back to the safety of the police station. As it was, I knew I wouldn't have a problem with my bodyguard to lead the way.

Having both prosecuted and defended gang bangers for almost 20 years, I like to think I've got a decent grip on reality when it comes to dangerous situations.

But I definitely did push the envelope.
