A female diver broke her ankle when she fell, in full gear, while descending the stairs at Blue Grotto (Williston, Florida) on Saturday 11-20-2010. She was assisted by fellow divers, who also took her to a local hospital. I believe one of the divers had emergency medical experience.

Be careful on those stairs. There is much construction on and around them, and by the time you are descending them, you have signed a liability waiver.

I'm going to wait for someone to blame it on split fins, spare air,PADI certification, diving beyond limits, using Nitrox, using a BC rather than a Wing.....etc. etc.

I am sure the News media will comment about her "Oxygen Tank".

I do hope she recovers quickly.

Bitter much?

I can definitely see this happening on the stairs at Blue Grotto. Dive boots don't exactly give you a lot of support and those stairs can get pretty wet.

I'd hate to see what happens if someone falls down the stairs at Devil's Den; those things always scare me.

I did take a bad fall at Devils Den a few years back but lucky for me there was no permanent injuries now I'm much more careful on those slippery steps.
Getting too old to handle those kind of falls anymore.

Poor lady. As a natural-born klutz, I'm very apprehensive about suffering a similar fate. I loathe carrying doubles rigs and crap down steep, wet stairs to the water. It's one of the reasons I'm considering moving to sidemount one of these days. Carrying one tank at a time to the water leaves one hand free to cling to the railing (where possible).

Ouch! A broken ankle is quite painful. A speedy recovery for the patient and cheers for those that helped her.

:rofl3: Back in the day, training was a lot more rigorous. I remember tightrope walking the banisters in full equipment to perfect my balance--but agency standards have been so diluted, divers take the stairs these days. We were a lot fitter back then, too. A lot of us would just do a handspring over the steps and into the water, so breaking an ankle wasn't a risk.

LOL, time for the "PADI Stair Diver" specialty

Slipping and falling in dive gear is a scary thought. Packing in with all the crap on would not be fun. I've been trying out some felt soled boots for some of the slippery rock areas.
