Even back in the 80's when I used to spearfish with Frank's, when any of us saw somebody spearing fish at a swimming beach, we would feel ashamed for them....this is a behavior someone who knows this guy needs to explain to him---as something you just don't do.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, that this is a new freediver, and someone new to spearfishing...his friends need to point him at acceptable places to spearfish.

I am also assuming that Dumpster Diver made this post for the fun of it, because he likes to get a rise out of many of the BHB crowd....Even so DD, you should give that freediver some better options..better places to go spearing... :)

I would agree Dan. I saw it as a troll. But DD made posts where I inferred he was the diver in the video. There are so many (hundreds?) who love this place and so many (scores?) who work hard to preserve it. If DD seriously believes "stabbing" is not "spearing" I have to wonder.

"Morally", we're now talking morals.

I engaged in immoral activity because I carefully selected my target, used my breathholding skills and a legal type of gear to take a fish (that was of legal size, during an open fishing season) that a dozen hook and line fisherman on an adjacent peir would have been targeting at the same time (if they knew it was there)????
:rofl3:

What we "ought" to do is really the most important issue here. If you have to be forced to do the RIGHT thing by laws, it is a pretty sad statement about the selfishness of individuals. I would like to believe that the entire group of us that dive the BHB regularly, can co-exist without the need for the police to step in and force us to behave properly.
DD, you know very well the VAST MAJORITY of people diving the BHB will be offended by the knifing of the flounder....you might as well have stabbed a baby deer ( bambi) at a petting zoo....Really man, why do you want to upset so many people....what possible good comes out of this?

At least one law was broken. Spearing within 100 yards of a fishing pier...

It actually is not legal...too close to the public fishing pier...

If you were under water you were spearfishing; spearing only takes place above the water.

OK. I now agree and condemn the actions in the video because if I have to follow the rules, so should everyone else. I am not into breaking real laws such as the FWC's definition of spearfishing or it's ambiguous distance-from-something, but its still badass and I would have done the same thing at any other divestie. Here is a picture of my personal best hogfish I caught barehanded on a night dive- Its hard to change a hunter's feelings towards his/her right to harvest game.:idk:

Yeah, I'm a hunter too, but I don't think it's all that to take game while it's sleeping. Not condemning it, but I IJS, you're putting it out here.

Well, DD, you'll be easy to spot with that wetsuit, and we'll all be watching your every move from now on. Do what you like, but you'll lose friends and respect at the Bridge. You may not care about either.

So you really have to ask yourself, was a flounder worth it?

Maybe DD is thinking about the places where they have a thing about triggers in the spearguns, slings and other spear delivery devices.
The state of Florida doesn't make a difference between trigger or no trigger, even using a screwdriver (which happens to be excellent tool to get flounder) would be considered spearfishing. Anything that impales the fish will be considered "spearfishing" specially if the person making the interpretation has the ability to write a ticket. So getting a fish with a stick within so many feet of the bridge would produce a ticket if caught.

Now as far as the "moral" thing to do.... please... if it isn't illegal, there is nothing immoral about taking dinner home.
Not wanting to hunt in dive sites filled with tourist.... very wise. I doubt there would be any fish to hunt among a bunch of tourist divers.

What happened to the sign on the beach that says BHB is a no take zone? Or does that not include those that choose to spearfish?

AFAIK it's still there. But I guess some think you can still take them dead. Particularly when the blood rises in their veins.

You know, I can almost forgive DD's killing of the Flounder if out of ignorance. But how about this guy talking testosterone crap and killing sleeping fish with his hands. I've seen other posts of his. God knows how many sleeping fish he has maimed before he got the one he posted here.

What a sicko. Like beating deer or hogs with sticks and "harvesting" those that don't get up.

Are you Robin Hood or something? "Its hard to change a hunter's feelings towards his/her right to harvest game." Or some ignorant Redneck.

Sorry Jenny.

Not directed at you. A couple posts above. :kiss2:
