Just to satisfy a little curiosity, exactly what is the value of something like this?

The image or the associated drama?

A great idea, but one which costs money we simply don't have. The only option is to cut back on the fun we can have. Its sad when you consider the effect a few people can have on many.
Then I'll give you my free opinion, for whatever that's worth. You might want to stick with the conservative approach, that is to not copy posted photos without the user's express written consent. When it comes to approving ads like the current one for Cozumel, it's a good idea to have express written consent to use each of the photos you select. Nothing fancy: a simple e-mail to the photographer like "I'd like to use one of your photos for an upcoming Scubaboard trip poster, is that OK", followed by a "Sure" would probably be enough "paper trail" at least for amateur photogs and this sort of use of their photos. I'm sure plenty of people have nice photos they'd willingly donate to the cause, especially if they get a teeny bit of attribution or even a thank you. You can still have fun in the playground, but like our parents always said, just remember to look both ways before crossing the street and don't take candy from strangers.

Good answer, Mossman;

I had thought it was about the principle of the thing, and that JLyle was looking for acknowledgement. :(

Wow... this is taking a lot of time that I need to get a server loaded, configured and online all the while getting ready to leave early tomorrow morning for the Scuba Show in California. This might be my last answer to this for some time.

No offense but you didn't need to respond to that post then. You didn't correct anything so what was the point?

As Scubaboard is not (and NetDoc feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) a registered non-profit would that matter? Does a for profit that fails to actually make a/much profit change things?

Just to be clear - I meant the advertised service (the trip to Coz), not SB itself.

But legally, being a not-for-profit corporation, or indeed a for-profit corporation that does not actually make a profit, makes no legal difference to your liability for damages. But it can limit your ability to account for any profits.

Just the use of the image, under normal circumstances. If you found an image someplace that you wanted to use. What would adequate monetary compensation be? I know it will vary, but what is the range? $5? $50? I really have no idea.

For a rights managed image about that size, 40 bucks or so I would guess.

If of course you could sell it to begin with. Especially with underwater photos there are too many people willing to give them away just for published credit.
