I imagine the Key's boating / scuba community is at least as tight as any Army unit - any death affects everyone in the community. People flog themselves over the "should've, could've, ought've" thoughts.

Especially at this time of year, such things hit hard. Prayers and condolences to all.

Can not seem to find any pictures of the boat itself- what kind of boat was this? Having been a captain for many years I find it hard to believe that unsealed deck hatches caused the sinking. The post from a disgruntled ex-employee may have some truth to it but with the speed it seems that this boat went down the leak was much more than an unsealed deck hatch.

This is really, really sad. Does everyone remember all of the safety briefings we have listened to on dive boats? A boat in distress should have everyone on deck wearing a PFD, prepared to abandon ship.

herb from what is told the boat left the reef and when the water shifted from engine power to the back it went down instantly, and they more than likely had buoyancy from there suits.

This event saddens me. I personally know several dive boat operators, all of whom I consider to be diligent above and beyond the minimum requirements as they pertain to vessel safety and integrity.

Ours is an industry that requires extra special care in the area of safety, and, as far as I am concerned, the captain that says the deck hatch leaked for 5 months, and did nothing about it, is just as responsible (or more so) than the "new guy".

How can you with clear conscience announce to the world that you knew there was a problem, for months on end, but chose not to take the initiative and fix it, especially for the mere $20 you suggest it would have cost.

1 Dead, 7 survive sinking boat off of Florida Keys

A commercial dive boat sank Sunday afternoon with eight people aboard in the Atlantic Ocean off Islamorada Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The agency said it responded to the 30-foot commercial diving boat "Get Wet" after it took on water near the Molasses Reef with two passengers trapped within the hull.

A Good Samaritan aboard the pleasure craft "Visibility" reported the incident around 2 p.m. and the Coast Guard said that person saw the distressed boat's bow breaking the surface of the water and had rescued seven survivors before more help arrived.

The eighth passenger, a 36-year-old female, was pronounced dead ashore, Coast Guard Petty Officer Nick Ameen said Monday. She was one of the two people trapped inside the hull, he said. The other trapped person is a 28-year-old man who was taken to a hospital and on Sunday was expected to survive.

The home port for the "Get Wet" is Key Largo, Ameen said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also responded, and a commercial salvage company is to salvage the vessel.

The Coast Guard thanked the civilian mariner who saved the "Get Wet" crew and passengers.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims of this tragic occurrence," Capt. Pat DeQuattro, commander of Coast Guard Sector Key West said Sunday.
