My wife and I are both shooting the EPL-1 in an Olympus housing with an Inon D2000 strobe. I got an email from Amazon this morning that the EPL-1 body (no lens) is going for $149.99 including shipping. I bought a third body -- cheaper than insurance and this means I'll have a camera topside for dolphin (and other) pictures.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

now i have a dilemma, another body...or housing for my e-pm1? i guess it's a good dilemma to have...

I am doing the same thing

Ok, need quick advice please! My wife owns a Sony NEX-5 and I haven't bought a housing yet. I could but risk flooding her camera and upsetting her. Or I get this EPL-1 now for $150 and not have to share.

If I do this, what's the housing options and cost for the EPL-1? Also I see it doesn't come with a lens. What is a good choice for underwater and what does that cost?

Be careful jumping on the first deal you see on the Olympus line. The pricing right now is all over the place as products go on and off sale. I just bought an E-PM1 and housing last week. The E-PM1 was on sale up until last week for $399.00, body and 14-32mm lens. I actually ended up buying a refurbished setup with e-pm1, 14-42 series II R lens, and a 40-150mm zoom series I lens as a package including a 16GB SD card (which is worth about $10) for $449.00 total. When I got it this week it looked like factory brand new, not one scratch or fingerprint. The 14-32 lens still have factory protective plastic on it, as did the camera. The only way I could tell it was a refurb was it didn't have original boxes. It only has a 90 day factory warrantee, but the company I bought it from will cover it for the first year, and buying on a credit card doubles my warrantees, so I felt pretty good about that side of things. Refurbs may not be for everyone, it's up to you.

So right now the E-PL1 body is $149.00, and the housing seems to be going for around $599.00, or at least that's the lowest I can find it for. But if you look at the E-PL2, also on Amazon and in this case the body is going for $249.95, so $100.00 more, but the housing for it is going for $449.00 (also on Amazon). So the net is that the E-PL2 is $50 lower than the E-PL1 when you factor in the housing. Of course with either you need a lens, but that's a wash between the two as they can both use any of the available lenses.

If I didn't already habe the 1 with the houing (actually we have two identical systems) I would not buy the epl1 on this deal. But for people who have the system, this is a great price for a backup.

I would definitely buy a separate system, cheaper than divorce. You need to consider the cost of a whole system before making the leap. A whole system includes E-PL1 body, lens, housing, lens port, tray and strobe, same for the NEX. My estimate for the OLY system would be $1500-2000, while for the NEX, $2500-3000. The E-PL1 is discontinued, and I would definitely consider later models in the series, though the housings cost more for less. E-PL1 housings may become hard to find, too, so make sure one is available before you commit to OLY E-PL1.

The Olympus system is much cheaper, mainly because the OLY housing is relatively inexpensive, compared to the available housings for the NEX. The NEX housings are definitely a step up in quality, but I doubt that a person starting out would benefit, and the risk of flooding is high for any first system. For a pro, my gut feel is the NEX system would be better, even though I own Olympus E-PL1 etc.

For OLY, you need a lens. The kit lens with the E-PL1 is noisy and slow, so I would buy the later 14-42 IIR version separately. Cost is about the same, and the lens is definitely better. Later you may want a close up or wide lens, but the kit lens is surprisingly good for starting out, and it fits the standard port you get with the OLY housing. For a flash, the Inon S2000 seems to be very well liked. Very compact and works well, but not cheap.

I would also suggest you read everything you can about UW photography, and practice in a pool. Get to know the equipment, and you should have a lot of fun with it.

All I can say is that my husband literally twisted my arm (underwater!) to make me use his EPL-1, and it was the first time I ever really had FUN taking pictures. That's why we own three bodies, two kit lenses and a telephoto, and two housings . . . :)

I love my my EP-L1 and housing, I also have the 9-18 wide angle lens and Zen dome port. For $150 will buy back up body.
