Follow up question.

Any reason not to use the second stage from your pony as your octo?

None at all, in fact I do not have an octopus on my primary regulator, I use my pony for that purpose.

It depends. If you have a good size pony and always carry it, the octo is not needed and might be clutter

For small pony tanks, having access to the main tank to work things out with a buddy is nice.

If you are like me and sometimes use on and sometimes don't, I leave my octo on my primary.

I have my pony (19 cf) to use when I am in an out of air or equipment failure situation. As long as I have air, my buddy gets my primary and I'll use my tethered secondary. This keeps the pony available in the event another probelm shoud arise during the emergency ascent for either me or my buddy.

Or both if you know how to buddy breathe.

Hey thanks guys.i wasn't thinking of reg freeflow more a simple ooa when I posted.
I can see how a decent pony setup can offer a bunch of options to someone with a reg freeflow issue.or damage to other parts of the main rig.Or a buddy with issues with their gear.

I often use a 19cf pony for deeper and colder dives, with the Octo off the pony. Not real difficult or time consuming to add the octo to my main tank regular when I don't use the pony (have a independent setup for the Pony), much like adding the hose for my drysuit. For better or worse, the main reason I don't have an octo on my main tank when I have the pony is that I want to reduce the risk of a free flow in the cold when two people are breathing off the primary of the main tank. I very recently had my buddy's rig freeze in cold, dark, low vis water at 95 feet, and after I got him the Octo (which I keep clipped in the same position with or without the Pony) on the pony, all I could think of is that we were still on two separate systems. Obviously, a successful accent- but it definitely makes you consider how you are outfitted and how you handle these events if they happen.

If you mean only having one second stage on each, then because you will lose access to that gas source if you have a second stage failure

How is the mere presence of an octo on your main tank going to increase the risk of a 1st stage freeze?

If you give you OOG buddy the pony, your gas flow through the main 1st stage is going to remain constant regardless on how many seconds you have mounted.

Same here. With the pony, the octo on primary is not useful at all. The SDI Solo course recommends this as well. One less thing to fail (octo on main primary) and one less hose to tangle/be in the way.

You and I are reading tho post differently. The way Im reading it is that in a cold situation by doubling the gas draw (giving your buddy the octo) you double the flow through the first stage and thats an ingredient for a first stage freeze. So give the buddy your pony so draw through the first stage doesn't change

I guess the tidiest way would be to have the pony hose clipped to the primary second stage hose (using open mouth clips) from first stage to just short of the second stage then have the pony second stage hang off a necklace.
Hey guys Im happy to be cut down here. -Im just sorting the whole pony bottle situation in my head
