Why does this have to be an either/or discussion?

Where do you plan to go with your diving. AOW is pretty basic but most divers who plan to go further in the activity take it. But, unless you need the card for future plans, the knowledge and skills can be obtained without having some instructor hold your hand through a deep, night, and navigation dive. So, what are you looking to accomplish?

In PADI, you have to do AOW as a prerequisite to Rescue or Tech 1. Personally, I think rescue is the most valuable class.

Enjoy diving safely!

I believe you only need 3 Adventure Dives now as a prerequisite to Rescue. Used to need AOW as well as 20 logged dives, both which were dropped.

TMHeimer,

You are correct, you only have to be an Adventure Diver. However to serve as a prerequisite for Rescue, one of the dives must be Navigation.

If you are looking at tec diving it may be worth looking into GUE's Fundies class. It will benefit you more than a PADI AOW course if you want to be more comfortable with diving. Then again with the right instructor an PADI AOW can be just as challenging as a Fundies. It's all about the instructor.
