‹You don't have to tip the desk clerk!! The hotel has been over booked due to the reservations of Sunscape resorts and Sabor resort not compatible causing bookings from both systems for the same rooms. They won't be able to do it.

However!!!!

As soon as you get there tell them you want to do the club membership info. In Feb they offered a week rent a car, or spa certificates, or room upgrades, or $250 off your hotel bill. Just for 90 min of your time.

But don't believe a word of what they say just get your discount voucher and say no. The more you agree with them during the presentation the longer you will be there and the harder the sales pitch. We walked in verified the discount we would get then said no not interested the rest of the way and were out in 58 min.
Why are you shouting at us? :D

Christi hate to disagree with you but when I look at the condo prices they have off season starting from the 3rd week in Apr to mid May. This is from VRBO and a few other web sits. This is why I book this time of year.

Yeh, you're right - I probably don't know what I am talking about on this topic. I guess being a business owner and resident here for 13 years and the fact that May has been one of our busiest months overall (Christmas, Carnival and Easter week excluded) for the past 11 years has no bearing or credibility! I am never afraid to admit when I am wrong - but I am pretty certain about topics such as this one that pertain to and affect my business.

Just because SOME hotel and condo rates go down in May (most in MID May) is no indicator of seasons here. Hotels and condo owners are fighting for occupancy most of the year here because there are too many rooms/condos here these days, so many will offer low season rates or extend their "low season" rates just to get people in - but I am telling you - May is not low season!

Sarcasm does not become you, Christi. :D

I go to Cozumel every May, and I have for the past... Jeez, is it nearly 30 years now? Whew! Anyway, all I know is that my group never has trouble finding accommodations and is very often occupying the only table in restaurants (except for Kinta, of course). I think that the idea of "high season" is a subjective thing, and what is high season for one business may or may not be for another. Different businesses serve different segments of the tourist population, and they don't necessarily follow the same time signatures.

But IMO, it's kind of a silly argument. Tomayto, tomahto, potayto, potahto, let's call the whole thing off...

Gordon, you have also stayed in the same hotel for almost that many years :) AS I said, hotel low season rates are not the sole indicator. AS far as restaurants go - that is just another sad reality of the general situation here - not because it's May when you are here. Very few restaurants are at full capacity because we have so many wonderful choices now and so many all-inclusive that keep most of their guests captive for meals. I was in El Moro a few nights ago - the PEAK of high season and WE were the only table in there from start to finish of our meal!

It is not low season for diving - that is for sure. May has been historically one of our best months! My point is - people should not get a false sense of security thinking it's low season and they can book diving with whomever without advance reservations. This is where people may or may not get lucky depending on who they are booking with - so it really is relevant since most people here are divers :D I know the comment in question was regarding lodging - I'm just adding in the other important part :)

In other words, the diving high/low seasons don't exactly correspond with the hotel high/low seasons. May is optimal for diving and IMO the winter months suck because of northers. But for vacationers, winter months are nice and cool and May is hot hot hot.

You are right, people should not tip the staff at all, we don't want to insult their professionalism and imply some favoritism by expecting some preferential treatment. By god, dedication these people put forward is a reward in itself. There is nothing more honest than a charitable day at work.

PS: I don't see anything wrong with being ugly and arrogant as an American, I mean, it is just who I am. And if a resort would rather have an empty ocean-front room rather making a patron who cared enough to book their property for half a month even more happy, god bless.

Gee who knew they were being blessed by your presence? Does that work in reverse? Do you like being treated like that? That kind of attitude will soon get you a drink with spit in it. Enjoy.

IMO, he should maybe have added a smilie or something to indicate that the irony lamp was lit. If you had seen those remarks in context of the ongoing discussion at the time, I think you'd have realized that his comments were a sarcastic/ironic reply to what someone else was saying.

Or maybe you are doing the same thing. That's the problem with text communication, isn't it?

Go ahead. Use sarcasm. Yeah, that always works.

:D

Hey, have fun in CZM. No waves to listen to on the side you are most likely to stay on (facing the Mexican Coast). Waves on the other side of the island. There is shore diving, just ask your hotel folks. I have stayed at various hotels/resorts and many will let you dive off their beach--but they many not if you don't dive with a buddy. Anyway, the people are great in CZM. Try some cenote (cavern level) diving--like at Dos Ojos near Tulum, if you want a cool experience. They will require that you go with a technical cave diver--well worth it for a new experience.
