Dave Shaw should never be used as an example of a good diver doing a good thing. It was a relatively new diver (most of his dives were in courses) undertaking a stupid macho thing rather than try to see if the body would come up (remember he had connected a reel to the body and to the down line). In the end, this is what brought up not only the body, but his own.

The body probably would not have come up on its own. The tank was thoroughly embedded in the mud. When he got to the body on his ill-fated dive, he first cut it loose to release the body. That is when he discovered to his surprise that it floated.

Of course, I agree that the recovery of a body that had been lying at 270 meters for a decade was not a worthwhile activity. In comparison, a diver was lost decades ago in a cave in the Bahamas. His location is known. The parents said clearly that they do not want anyone risking a life to recover it. It's too bad the parents did not say that in this case.

If you don't know, I'm not going to waste my time trying to explain it to you

You told me I did not help my argument.
I stated the points of my "argument".
You reply with that?

I would suggest you have some other bee in your bonnet than the one I'm discussing. Take it up with that person not me.

He was the first CCR diver who went to 270m and came back alive!!! How many experienced CCR or OC divers had done that before?
How many times you had dived beyond 200m?
The man is gone so can you show some respect please?

Unless you can actually tell me what argument I am making your statement is pointless.

Like this: The difference of a duck is that one foot is both the same.

So either put up or shut up because right now I think you're just trolling.

Sorry, I missed the part where you're calling the shots here. I made my point, other people got it you didn't bad luck

You didn't make a point at all. You made a statement regarding something I wrote and when challenged you neither referenced your remark or even had the decency to indicate which part of my comments you found problematic. All you proved is that you don't know how to discuss a topic. When you engage someone directly you are expected to back up your comments or admit they have little merit... troll.

Whatever. There's knowing how to discuss a topic and there's having the time & interest to explain yourself to someone who clearly doesn't get it. Afraid you're just going to have to get over it. Go ahead call me troll a few more times if it makes you feel better

And of course the case breaks down even further once you look at exploratory cave diving, which in many cases, even if one attempts to mitigate all known risk, by its very nature has an very real potential for negative outcomes. At that point one has to ask why and whether the rewards out weigh the risk. For some it does, for others it doesn't. Ask Dave Shaws wife if she really really thinks it was worth it......
Why do you have to bring the next of kin into a public forum?
Many yrs ago there was a British female climber lost her life in climbing Everest. She left couple of children behind and the media had a field day.
So are you suggesting that every married person should find a nice and easy 9-5 job and leave the fun for the unattached?
