Only licensed marine park guides are permitted to spear the lionfish. The truth is, we have gotten a very good handle on the situation here. While we will never eradicate them completely, we have done an amazing job of controlling them - and you don't see that many on the standard dives anymore. OPening up carte blanche to the typical tourist divers would become an out of control issue and a safety issue very fast.

There are sponsored Lionfish Tournaments and trips conducted by the marine park for those who want to participate.

Well in the park right? North of the park is still a free for all right? At least I know I saw someone... SE.... with a crapload on a spear :)

Though she has never invited me to a lionfish fry.....

I was referring to to the Park. BA said we can spear in front of the hotel. Thanks for the info Christi.

Yes - you can there - if you find any :) I spend a lot of time swimming and diving in that area - and I can't remember the last time I saw a Lion fish around there!

For those that want to, we run Lion Fish kill trips to the north frequently. We have located 5 very nice new sites quite a ways north of Barracuda and intend to go there more frequently. Even in front of the Villa Aldora, on the wall we find many.

Unfortunately there are plenty to kill. I am told that one prolific ladyl got an 18 inch one last week!

If you go out near sunset you will see the lion fish more active and more visible. Typically they feed voraciously for about 2 hrs then. 18 inches, she must have been happy!:D its a good idea to properly marinate your lion fish before cooking...... STAYTHIRSTY.jpg

I have shot a couple along the shore up near Hotel B, Coral Princess and Nah Ha. Up north by boat a lionfish hunt is a lot of fun and usually pretty successful. I hope I get to do one on October again this year.

Still lots and lots of lionfish to hunt outside the marine park.

It is definitely amazing the difference and comparison between marine park and outside. It's like night and day in some places.
