This was about 10 years ago. We were on the boat heading out, and the DM asked us where we wanted to go. Palancar Caves was the call, and that is where we went. The DM took us down just outside the wall, and just outside the wall is where we stayed the entire dive. We just drifted past the outside of all the coral formations. A number of times I pointed at obvious and inviting access points as if to say "Aren't we going in?", but no, we just drifted along the outside until the dive was over.

For the second dive, we went to Las Palmas. The DM announced that he would check the current before the dive. He jumped in, submerged a little, and then came up, declaring we were in the right spot to begin the dive. As we descended, the tiny bits of débris passing by sure seemed to indicate the current was going the other way. We reached the reef and started to swim, clearly heading into the current. We went on that way for perhaps 10 minutes before we met another dive group going the other way. I imagine the DM of that group must have given our DM a "WTF?" look, because we turned around at that point. We quickly glided over the territory we had gone through at the beginning of the dive, and we spent the rest of the dive drifting over a sandy ocean floor.

I complained to the operation owner, and she explained that the DM we had had for that dive was a from some sort of freelance DM pool, and I was offered my money back. That was nice, but I don't go on dives hoping to get my money back. I go on dives hoping to have a great experience.

Nice find 3M. The skull faces are day of the dead items. The skeletal drawings are different. They are a tribute to the work of Jose Posada, a Mexican artist/satirist/political commentator. He should be more famous. Many are familiar with the image of Catrina but do not know it was Posada's work. Here is a link to his more popular pieces.

The Artist you are talking about is Carlos Tello. My wife and I bought a reef scene piece from him ~ 10 years ago that hangs on our dinning room wall. Glad to hear he is still around.

I have only been to Coz twice and to date my only "bad" experience was going through immigracion at el aeroporto.

It can be very disorganized, then there's the joy of two planes landing ahead of you. Locals have an express lane I've noticed.
If that's the worst, it's a great trip.

We waited over an hour at Grand Cayman last month. A lot of flights leave the northeast and arrive within a 2-3 hour span, 12:30-2:30. The best (for us anyway) was in St Lucia. There were 3 loads of 747 British jets landed just ahead of us on Boxing day. It looked like a 2-3hr minimum wait. A nice airport lady asked how old our son was (8 at the time) and we walked right past several hundred people to the family line and a 1 minute wait!

Worst definitely was getting bent and then coming home to find that my ATM card had been skimmed at the machine outside the chamber.

For me, the worst was that we managed to find the most expensive T-shirts in the Carribean. Too tired to bargain, and those things cost a fortune. Then they didn't even have my first choice in my size. Pretty big bummer after a great day.

All-in-all, the diving is great. I would not go to Coz for any other reason.
